A New Year ~ Hope for the World

Here is a song for our age as we reflect on what the world might be like when we are all vaccinated and can live a more ‘normal’ life again. But will we be the same? Will we treat the world and its precious resources any differently? Will we be seeking our life’s purpose anew, motivated by a greater awareness of the needs of others? Will our aspirations be more altruistic?

I am the Lord of Sea and Sky

I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in deepest sin
My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them,
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor…

We have seen so many acts of human kindness; thoughtful neighbourliness; people reaching out to others in a way seen less and less over recent years. Hopefully this will change us all for the better.

Once more we have been given a pause for reflection; another lock down here in the UK as we hope for a better life ahead of us once the old and vulnerable are vaccinated. Many of us have faced personal traumas and even tragedies through these difficult times but can we as individuals, as communities, as peoples, change for a life anew?

One thing we can do is to listen and learn from each other; just a small but precious beginning of growth and renewal

…and so as Hindu scripture says:

O seeker, know the true nature of your soul,
and identify yourself with it completely.
O Lord, (may we attain) the everlasting consciousness
of Supreme Light and Joy.
May we resolve to dedicate our life
to the service of humankind,
and uplift them to Divinity.
(Yajur Veda)

Keep well and keep safe!
