A New Year Flower and a Prayer for a Friend

I admired a plant like this, in fact it was the mother of this one, when visiting a neighbour and friend around New Year 2017. It was so beautiful! The friend promised that he would remember me when he was splitting and re-potting his plant and in August last year this one appeared on our doorstep.

It sat quite happily, all spiky leaves until this Christmas, when I noticed a bud appear. Lo and behold, by New Years Eve of 2018, it had come into bloom. Do you know what it is?

This neighbour is going through Chemotherapy at the moment. He us such a positive, cheerful person and I like to see this lovely flowering plant as a prayer for his recovery.
